Hungry Cloud Darkening

“Dark Cloud At Water”

LP Fontee Fount

Mellow Brooding Indie

Dark Cloud At Water begins and ends with tracks that channel the military march and reverb tank sound of Roy Orbison’s Running Scared. Not a bad way to bookend a record. That’s not to say this is some kind of doo-wop revival album. In fact, I don’t think they were even going for Roy Orbison, but that’s one of the many musical landmarks this album meanders past. This record is generally fairly down tempo, and it feels soft and spacious. The occasional use of a variety of keys and pitched percussion reminds me of mid 2000’s Polyvinyl popsters Aloha. Standout track No Feeling brings some light airy classical guitars to a male/female vocal arrangement. The end effect is a lot like everything good about Broken Social Scene’s more laid back numbers.

Dark Cloud at Water is a beautifully written and recorded slice of mellow pop goodness. Check out one of my favorite tracks Moments Inside Cloud or just listen to the whole thing on Bandcamp! While you’re there check out the physical version. The packaging is really cool.
