Riot Grrrl

It’s hard to talk about Olympia Washington’s Margy Pepper without mentioning the parallels to Riot Grrrl greats Sleater Kinney. They’re all girls, they’re from the Pacific Northwest, and they play that style of noodly angular riff that SK perfected in the mid 90’s. Sleater Kinney comparisons aside Margy Pepper is great. These songs are so well constructed. The riffs are weird enough to be interesting and just barely melodic enough to get stuck in your head. It’s the kind of music that gives you a funny feeling. For an example of their full blown musical mastery, try and follow the structure of Deepest Bottom of the Darkest Lake. The tempo chages and shifts in the groove are impeccable. While the guitar work is very SK influenced, the vocals remind me more of All Girl Summer Fun Band. This combo makes for some interesting jams. Look for Golden Webs on Cassette and LP in the near future.
